Britten 100: Peter Grimes at Deutsche Oper

In 2013, most of opera companies, symphony halls and music centers celebrate Benjamin Britten Centennial. Deutsche Oper in Berlin is no exception. The opera company celebrated 100 years of its existence in 2012; one hundred years of many wonderful opera productions, concert performances and memorable events. Last week, I was very fortunate to be able to come and see an interesting production of Britten's masterpiece.

It's no secret that I am a great admirer of Britten's works. I did see my first Peter Grimes in London more than 10 years ago. I fell in love with the story, with the dark characters (I don't think Grimes has the only dark personality there) and most of all with the music that says it all. Since then, I have bought many DVD and CD recordings of the work.
Last year, I was lucky to meet and spend really nice time with Christopher Ventris. He told me wonderful stories about his various opera characters, love for music and theatre. He also spoke about Peter Grimes, the dream role of every English dramatic tenor. The interview is available on this link (English original text is below Czech translation).

This production shows the ultimate view on Grimes, a man who is unfortunately judged by the villagers. The tragedy and sadness can be seen in different shades of shadows and lights.
The brilliant cast includes Christopher Ventris (Peter Grimes), Michaela Kaune (Ellen Orford), Markus Brück (Balstrode), Rebecca de Pont Davies (Auntie) or Thomas Blondelle (Bob Boles). They all gave memorable performances. I was very impressed by Deutsche Oper Chorus that seemed to enjoyed every moment on stage. Donald Runnicles and the orchestra did a fantastic job. Maestro Runnicles is a renown and experienced conductor of Britten's works.
Don't miss two other performances (February 13 and 15) of Britten's great work! You can find more information about this prodution and tickets on Deutsche Oper Berlin website.
